Transitioning from Academia to Industry

Transitioning from Academia to Industry: Define and Find your Own Dream Job

What do I need to learn when I look for jobs in industry? And how important is writing an industry CV? Do I really need a LinkedIn profile? What about networking?

As an academic, you have acquired many important skills that are directly transferable to industry but do you know how to present them in a way industry employers understand? To become a successful job seeker, you have to understand what the industry needs, what job titles are relevant to you and, above all, you have to interpret what lies behind each job title. What is more, you have to realize that 70% of all jobs do not appear on your job searches – they are hidden and you will only find and get them by acquiring a local network and build a network of referrals.

Today’s labour market is fast and diverse and there are many new job titles that did not exist just five years ago. What are the main trends in the market at the moment? Where are the future jobs? And how can you sell yourself for a job when your LinkedIn and CV profile do not match it 100%? The trick is to re-brand your LinkedIn and CV by clarifying your interests, presenting your transferable skills, and using the terminology from job ads! Which means, not using your academic CV or only describing what you have done. This is what we call Personal Branding.

In this seminar, you will learn more about your transferable skills, get examples of CVs from a branding perspective, and learn why LinkedIn is so important as well. You will also get practical tips on how to build a Career Development Plan.
